The Proverbs 31 Woman and I haven’t always gotten along.

Of course, I would never have said that out loud, but somewhere inside me that feeling was true. For most of us “normal” women, she seems a bit unrealistic. (Or very unrealistic!) I did dig into a Bible study about her and I learned that some feel she is actually a compilation of a woman throughout the different stages of her life. Nonetheless, she seems intimidating and way outperforms me on many levels.

The last time I had a chance to read about her, this verse jumped off the page: “Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she smiles at the future” (Proverbs 31:25, NASB).

My skeptical spirit got knocked to the ground as I realized that this verse could apply to me. Right here, right now. And I had to admit that sometimes it doesn’t. The demands of my day, my responsibilities, and my fears and the uncertainties about my future can get the best of me. But this woman, among all her responsibilities and pressures, is described as having strength and dignity and smiling at the future.

And so my prayer today for me and for you is the same. May we have such confidence in the great God we serve and may our eyes be so fixed on him and his great plans for us that we can smile at the future. Let us trust God’s words from Jeremiah 29:11 that says God has good plans for us to “give us a hope and a future.”

So go ahead and smile knowing God’s got great things in store for you. And watch out. Smiles are known to be contagious!
