Timidly I asked the new girl, Julie, that all-important question:

“When’s your birthday?”

In my 4th grade heart, I knew good things were to come when we discovered our birthdays were on the same day! And so began the wonderful year of the “Bestie.” Shared stories, secrets, and afternoons of fun with a best friend.

And then…. her dad was transferred. She would move at the end of the school year, so we had to spend every spare minute together until then. On the day she moved, a family friend brought some homemade soup, and Julie’s mom invited me to stay for lunch. We ate out of a hodge-podge of the last few dishes waiting to be packed. Julie had a beautiful china bowl that another friend had given her, and in her best-friend generosity, she said, “Here—you eat out of my special bowl.” I took it carefully, and we sat down on the floor of her empty house. We ate in mournful silence, each hoping it would take a long, long time to finish that soup.

Finally it was time to say goodbye, so I stood up and went to put the bowl in the sink. In one terrible moment the beautiful bowl slipped out of my hand and crashed to the floor. All the emotion of saying goodbye and breaking the bowl and breaking her heart came out in a flood of tears. We both just hugged each other and cried.

I’m thankful for a friend who still loved me, though I broke her heart…and her bowl! Her friendship was just a taste of the love shown to me by Jesus, my ultimate “Bestie.” Even though I’ve broken God’s heart many times, he says, “I’ve never quit loving you, and I never will.”

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” John 14:27
